Recently I was asked to find out what the best Android-based smartphone is you can buy under 400 euro. I decided to share my findings for anyone who might be asking a similar question and/or have a similar budget.

Since I don't recommend purchasing a new phone with outdated software (older generations and lots of budget phones still ship with Android 2.x) I limited my search to Android 4.x only.

As of december 2012, based on these specifications, I'd recommend the Sony Xperia S or, the LG Optimus 4X HD.

  2. Nexus devices are great, unfortunately the Nexus 4 wasn't available - at least in the Netherlands - at the time this article was posted. Since this information is over a year old, and smartphone development moves fast, I recommend conducting a fresh search.
